What to see

The Lower and Upper Barrakka Gardens are small public gardens with breathtaking views over the Grand Harbour. St John’s Co-Cathedral’s relatively understated façade hides an incredibly rich Baroque interior. Note in particular the marble gravestones of Knights making up the floor, and the two Caravaggios, including the monumental Beheading of St. John.

The National Museum of Archaeology is an hour very well-spent, especially as an introduction to the prehistoric sites elsewhere in Malta. If you’ve got a free day in Malta, visiting one of the Neolithic Temples is a must-do: they predate Stonehenge and the Pyramids by more than a thousand years.

It’s often said there’s as much of Valletta underground as there is above ground, and the Underground Valletta tour will take you through underground passageways, World War II bomb shelters, wells, and enormous vaulted cisterns. This tour needs to be pre-booked, so plan ahead.

Food and drink

In need of lunch? D’Office has some tables reserved for lunch for our attendees for all the conference days – first come, first served.

  • 🍽️Great Lunch Options: No. 43, Caffè Cordina, La Giara, and Nom Nom Pinseria.
  • 🥗Vegetarian/Vegan: Soul Food and Ġugar offer excellent options.
  • 🍕Casual Dinner: Sotto or Zero Sei. For a tasting menu to sample Maltese cuisine, opt for Legligin. Naan Bar is a good halal option.
  • 🥂Evening Drinks: Café Society is a great gathering place.

* Feel free to explore beyond these, but remember most places in Valletta are small and will struggle to take large groups.
